Personal Development

At Keldmarsh Primary School, our Personal Development curriculum is ambitious and inclusive to all. It not only comprises of PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) through an inclusive whole school scheme of work called ‘Jigsaw,’ and fulfils the requirements of the statutory Relationships and Health Education (RSE) curriculum. It  links well with non-statutory EYFS guidance, Development Matters and with all areas of the fundamental British Values. It also offers opportunities for children’s SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development.

The Six Key Themes taught across the whole school (Jigsaw) are:

Being Me in My World: Developing a sense of belonging, welcoming others and being part of a school community, a wider community and a global community.

Celebrating Difference: Developing our understanding of diversity and inclusivity and accepting and respecting differences such as disability, racism, friendships and conflicts.

Dreams and Goals: Developing a knowledge of goal setting, personal aspirations, strength and overcoming challenges. Understanding the emotions that go with this and recognising dreams and goals of others in the community, in other cultures and around the world.

Healthy Me: Developing a deeper understanding of keeping safe and leading a healthy lifestyle - physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. It also includes building our awareness of drugs and alcohol education.

Relationships: Developing an understanding of building respectful and healthy relationships with oneself and others around us. It is learning how to keep safe, dealing with conflict, building self esteem and resilience and communication skills.

Changing Me: Developing an understanding of our bodies and how these change as we grow older. It is developing our awareness of assertiveness, coping positively with change, puberty, safeguarding and self-respect.

The Jigsaw scheme of work is progressive across all year groups and works to build on the children’s prior knowledge and understanding. We believe that this scheme is extremely beneficial in not only developing the children’s awareness of themselves and others around them and in the wider community, but to also build upon life skills that they can take with them as they grow into adulthood.
